A real job search starts with you applying somewhere. A scam often starts with a stranger texting you first. That order is the tell.
The rule
Legitimate employers contact people who applied, through email on the company's own domain or a phone call from a named recruiter you can verify. They do not cold-text strangers with a flexible, high-paying remote role and no interview. If a job offer or interview invite arrives as an unexpected text, treat it as a scam until you have proof otherwise.
Why scammers use text
Texts are cheap to send in bulk, they feel personal, and they slip past the spam filters that catch email. The message is short and upbeat on purpose: a quick yes pulls you into a chat on WhatsApp or Telegram, where the real ask comes later. The FTC has published repeated alerts that an unsolicited job text is usually a scam, on its job scams page.
What it looks like
"We saw your resume, $35/hour, work from home, flexible hours, reply YES to start." There is no company you applied to, no real interview, and a fast push to message a manager on a chat app. From there it becomes a task scam, a request for bank or ID details, or a fake check.
What to do right now
- Do not reply, click any link, or call the number back.
- Block the number and forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it.
- If it named a company, contact that company through its real website to confirm.
- Report the scam to the FTC.
